Experienced, Talented Pilot Lands Jet in Emergency

    By admin | February 18, 2009

The recent emergency Hudson River ditching of an incapacitated Airbus 320 airplane by a senior US Airways Pilot represented a rare and extraordinary piloting achievement.

The passengers were extremely lucky to have Captain Sullenberger at the controls that day, since he represented a rare combination of long experience and even specialized training as a glider pilot. In fact, without engine power, he was piloting a 159-passenger glider!

As I thought about it, I realized there are parallels in everyone’s interaction with professionals. For my family and myself, I like to have sophisticated, experienced professionals. The equivalent of a Captain Sullenberger, who incidentally was a graduate of the Air Force Academy and flew Air Force fighters for six years and then began his long career as a commercial pilot. In the world of cosmetic surgery, the “Sullenberger” equivalent would be a surgeon who had superior residency training plus additional fellowship training after board certification and then many years of experience under his belt – particularly military experience.

Less-experienced and less-sophisticated pilots might be well capable of managing an airplane through a less common complication. But, when the going gets real tough and an unusual emergency presents itself - as was this incident - you’d like to have that senior pilot at the controls.

Likewise, for your cosmetic procedure, you’ll feel more comfortable and confident knowing that your surgeon has superior training, a long run in the operating room and has probably already managed his share of difficult cases, including emergencies and complications.

    Nothing trumps talent and experience!
